Robben Island to Big Bay

Robben Island to Big Bay

This is what I call the official start of my journey. I had prepared for this day for exactly a year.
I had swum in Johannesburg through the coldest of winters. I would often wake up early when the temperature was 5 degrees and less and I’d go swim. I just thought, let me make my training so hard that when it comes to the actual crossing, I’d be ready for anything.
I swam and trained in water as low as 10 degrees and when the day of the crossing arrived, we took the water temp, it was 15.5 degrees… tropical.
It was the most magical swim, perfect conditions, warm water (for me) and a favourable current. I left Cape Town that day a changed human. We really can achieve anything we put our minds to.
We just have to believe in ourselves, even when others doubt you.
